  • Sacagawea – led Lewis and Clark through the wilderness

  • Noah Webster – first person in America to write school books for children

  • Gadsden Purchase – land bought just above the Mexican border on which to build a railroad

  • Louisiana Purchase – doubled the size of the United States

  • Northwest Territory – area of land later became the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin

  • War of 1812 – war between England and America with NO winner

  • Alamo – a Spanish mission where 187 men died for the freedom of Texans

  • San Jacinto – the place where the Texans defeated Santa Anna and his army

  • Gold – important natural resource in California that caused settlers to rush there to find it
